Take the next step in your faith journey by helping teens
take their first.
At the true heart of any youth ministry program, you will
not find workbooks, lesson plans, or lectures. You will find
people. It is inside these people that the love of Jesus Christ is
embodied. A young person will never be conscious of God’s love unless
they receive it through another person first.
At St. Mary of the Falls, these people are called Core
members. They are adult men and women who give the greatest gift of
all—the gift of God. This is not a gift that many people or places are
offering. Visiting a school, a home in your neighborhood, or the places
teenagers hang out on weekends will reveal this fact. Turning on the TV,
browsing the internet, or going to the cinema will have the same result.
“It is not the will of your Heavenly Father that one of
these little ones be lost.”
-- Matthew 18:14
Core members lead teenagers to Jesus. This is
accomplished first and foremost through the relationship formed by being
present to them on a weekly basis. It is through the simple loving
example of others that most people are converted to a deep faith, or any faith
at all. It is rarely accomplished by lectures, intellectual arguments, or
videos. Although these are important elements in delivering the Gospel,
nothing speaks louder of God’s love than a person who shows a teen they are
worth their time and effort. Reflecting on the Incarnation shows how God
the Father shares this view that a person is the best tool through which to
reveal His goodness.
Adult men and women, the young and young at heart, single
and married, all embrace this opportunity to be involved in youth
ministry. It is for them personally fulfilling on the deepest levels to
minister to teens who need the Gospel. It is a way to deepen their own
spirituality, become more connected to our parish, and answer the baptismal
call to serve that we all share. Core members grow closer to God by
serving young people.
If not us, who?
If not now, when?
If not for the Kingdom, why?
“The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.”
-- Matthew 9:37
