The word advent means the arrival, we are waiting to celebrate, to remember the coming of Christ the Messiah. A really important birthday!! I love the anticipation that a little child has for the celebration of a coming birthday. They’ll show on their fingers how many years old they are and are going to be. They also know how many more days until the big event. They ask a million questions about the party and of course the excitement of getting gifts.
Then the day comes and we relive the joy and adventure of birthdays through the eyes of that child. What fun!
The season of Advent should have a little bit of that child- like excitement and adventure for us. But it seems that all too often these holidays become a real challenge and even a dreaded reality for some. Christmas has a lot of planning and rushing around and of course there are gifts. There is constant struggle to keep a balance in the celebrating and not lose sight of the real significance, the spiritual reality that started all of this. You know, keep Christ in Christmas.
One thing for sure, Christ came at an unexpected time and in an unexpected manner. So, this Advent, in trying to keep the perspective, perhaps we could bring Christ at unexpected times and to unexpected places.
A kind word in a tight situation Patience in a long line. A thank you to the frazzled clerk. Making that phone call you’ve been meaning to make. An extra word or two in that Christmas card.
Try to be creative and you put Christ back into Christmas. It could be exciting and even an adventure!
One more day, God’s way!
